Guatemala 2013 Blog One- The Journey

Our GlobalFire team made it safely to Retalhuleu. We landed in Guatemala City by way of Panama City. Got all 12 bags through customs although there were some strange looks. In the bags were extinguishers, air cylinders, axes, haligan tools and other assorted donated items for the Retalhuleu Bomberos. (The shipping container is held up in Panama but we hope it gets here by Sept 10.)

We were met by an ambulance and two personal vehicles at the airport to transport us and the equipment to Retalhuleu. The Bomberos were very excited to meet us. The trip was about 180 kms unfortunately it was in Guatemala City rush hour. Took over an hour to get out of the city and then we traveled on the C2 highway. This is one of the busiest thru-fares in Guatemala and is mostly single lane. A considerable amount of large trucks on the road. The trip took about five hours total.
