Guatemala 2013 Blog Five- The Wish List

The GlobalFire Team went through all the equipment of Company 11. – On a side bar- one of the things that will stick in all the GlobalFire Team members' memories of this mission was opening all the compartments on the apparatus to find most of them empty or with equipment that is either broken or nearly obsolete. The team did compare the needs of the Bomberos with the donated equipment being shipped from Canada (which is still tied up in Panama)to make a perspective shopping list.

With the wish list in hand and accompanied by one of the Chiefs from Company 11, some team members ventured into the local markets. It turned out to be very beneficial for the team to have Salvador with them as not only did he know many people, they were the center of attention in a few of the places in the market. The presence of a local Bombero made negotiations easier as well a little added security.

With donated money many tools were purchased that will be given to the Bomberos during the upcoming training.

The things we have taken for granted throughout our fire service careers are almost deemed luxury items to these fire fighters. Bolt cutters, sledge hammers, saw blades and flash lights to name a few. The buying power of the donated money has gone far.
